IPA serves as a universal cleaner and disinfectant across many industries. In laboratory and cleanroom environments, it is used to wipe down work surfaces, equipment, and tools to remove dust, grease, and contaminants. It is a key ingredient in some disinfectants and hand sanitizers and is also found in products such as anti-freeze and electronic cleaners.
Technicians often use 70% IPA solutions to wipe down glove boxes or clean laminar flow hoods, as the diluted alcohol remains on surfaces slightly longer than pure alcohol, allowing for more effective germicidal action. Higher concentrations (91%–99%) are used when a residue-free quick dry is required, such as for cleaning electronics or optics. IPA is a versatile solvent that enables effective equipment surface cleaning and sanitization without leaving residues.
