Can I use a 100% cotton wiper in a cleanroom?
The answer is yes, cotton wipes are superior to their counterparts for specific applications under certain conditions.
Cleanroom wipers are available in several different fabrics and materials, including synthetics (man-made materials), “naturals” (material found in nature), and blends or composites of synthetic and naturals. Cotton is natural and we know that synthetic fabrics are cleaner than natural fabrics, so under what conditions would cotton be preferable?
As Howard Siegerman points out in Wiping Surfaces Clean, “For aerospace applications, only woven cotton, multiply extracted with appropriate solvent, exhibits the low levels of NVR required for payload cleaning and cleaning validation. Cotton wipers are used in applications where heat resistance (cotton will not melt like a synthetic fiber) or where buffing of the surface is required.”1
Applications:
- Cleaning, polishing, burnishing metallic, and non-metallic magnetic media disk surfaces.
- Cleaning diffusion furnace equipment in water fabrication and other equipment
- FDA 21 CFR 177.2800 (GRAS) for food processing applications.
- Absorbent work surface material
- USP <797> suitable upgrade from gauze
Tip #5: Choosing Cleanroom Consumables: A 100% cotton wiper is abrasion resistant, thermally stable, highly sorbent, solvent resistant and static dissipative. A good choice for specific applications in ISO Class 6-8 cleanrooms.
