Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) is a type of contaminant. Some say it is an even worse contaminant than particulates. It is a sudden flow of electricity between two electrically charged objects caused by contact.

ESD can cause damage to electronic devices used in many industries, such as electronics (televisions, stereos, computers, semiconductors, digital cameras, and integrated circuits), medical devices, and pharmaceutical, etc. The actual cost of ESD damage to these industries is estimated as running into the billions of dollars annually.
